Horse racing.? I understand that vegans have strong views on animal welfare and I'd like to know what the general vegan view is on competitive sports involving animals, such as horse/dog racing? As a horse owner, a vet and and someone who has been seen going hoarse in Cheltenham, I have coflicting views within my own self. I'd love to hear what others think about it.

How is horse racing even allowed to be a sport? It's completely un ethical.....ive read numerous articles where they're like "it was only a minor shin splint" is'nt this obviously caused by the trainer exhausting it..? and then after barbaro's ankle shattered? how has this not been addressed? does anyone agree with me? i can't belive no one's fighting to ban horse racing.

Why doesnt PETA protest and shut down the Kentucky Derby and horse racing? Why wont PETA step in and finally shut down horse racing? In almost every race horses have to be killed after they break their leg or get minor injuries. Do you consider horse racing a form of animal abuse? I am appalled to find out on the evening news that a race horse had to be put down because he broke an ankle during a race. A race horse that had broken an ankle was no longer good for racing anymore, so they put him down in order to save possibly thousands of dollars in vet bills. So much for the economics of horse racing. Just imagine doing this to a human being who had broken his ankle. Do you think a race horse who was injured in a race should be allowed to retire in peace and receive full pension and benefits?

Am I missing something here about horse racing? I've just read that over a hundred horses have died in the last year during horse racing. Am I missing something here? Surely if we took another animal, dogs for example, and started involving them in some sport where some end up dying, I can't see anyone accepting this. Can someone tell me what SI means in Horse Racing? I need a detailed explanation, so if you don't know, please don't answer. I would like to know when it says : "out of a SI.89 mare" or "her mother is SI.105" what that means. On a racing report I'm looking at, I see a column that says Sp. In. and the highest number (85) is the horse that won. So my guess is that it means "Speed Index", but does that mean the horse with a SI.105 is WAY faster than the one with SI.85? Or does it differ race to race, depending on distance, track conditions, etc? If you read a description of an ad for a horse for sale, and it said : "her mother is SI.105" would that mean the horse has racing potential (it's a yearling horse)? What are some betting strategies of the pick 4 in horse racing? I've been watching TVG (horse racing TV on DISH network) and they periodically show their Pick 4 tickets for a particular track. They turn a $1 Pick 4 ticket into a, let's say for example, a $48 ticket... I assume this all depends on how many horses they involve in their wager.
